Mushroom Power

Medicinal Mushrooms are all the rage these days and it’s no wonder why. The funky little fungi are praised for their capacity to bring the human body back into a state of equilibrium, strengthen the immune system and enhance hormonal functions.

They’re a kingdom of fungi that are grown in many parts of the world. Traditionally used in Chinese medicine, mushrooms are known to support many of our body systems, particularly the immune system. They contain a high number of polysaccharides (in particular, beta-glucans), along with bioactive compounds that provide the body with antibacterial, immune enhancing, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancerous benefits, to name a few. They are also known to assist with anxiety, brain focus, libido, hormones, and blood sugar.

Types of Medicinal Mushrooms and what they’re good for:

Lion’s Mane: A mushroom native to North America, Europe, and Asia, this wonderful mushy is known as a neuro-protector, assisting with all things mind related. Used for thousands of years in Traditional Chinese medicine, they increase energy levels, as well as enhance mental clarity/mood, and cognition, when consumed regularly.

Turkey Tail: These mushrooms are multi-coloured fungi that grow on tree trunks and fallen trees in wooded areas. They are plentiful in various parts of the world. They have a variety of powerful antioxidants and other compounds that may help boost your immune system and even help fight certain cancers. Plus, turkey tail may improve gut bacteria balance, which can positively impact your immunity.

Reishi: Native to Asia, this beauty has been used for thousands of years for its calming, restorative properties. Enhancing immunity, improving sleep, assisting with fatigue, reducing anxiety and stress are just some of its significant benefits. It is also known that some consume Reishi for health conditions, including high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Cordyceps: Cordyceps is a fungus that lives on certain caterpillars in the high mountain regions of China. People most commonly use cordyceps for athletic performance, to tonify and strengthen the lungs, nourish and fortify the kidneys, and enhance general health and wellbeing.

Shiitake: An edible mushroom native to East Asia, which is now cultivated and consumed around the globe. Shiitakes are rich in polysaccharides- compounds that are well known for their anti-inflammatory properties and protection against cell damage. These mushrooms support your immune system and boost white blood cell production, which is essential for fighting off bad bacteria and viruses.

Chaga: The Chaga mushroom grows on birch trees throughout the northern hemisphere. It often resembles a dark clump of dirt, however, has bright orange tissue beneath its exterior. This mushroom is high in antioxidants and plant compounds and is highly regarded to be part of a healthy, balanced diet. Chaga’s are known to help with stress reduction, lower bad cholesterol, and support healthy immune function in the body.

Sounds good, how do I take them?

Mushrooms can be consumed daily in many different forms.

  • Fresh: Eat whole in all its glory or chop/cook up into your favourite meal (e.g., curry, stir-fry, salad, soup) Note: Only Shiitake, Lion’s Mane, Maitake, Oyster can be consumed this way.

  • Powder: Mushrooms are dried and then ground down into a powder form for consumption. This is a great way to consume the ‘chitin’ of a mushroom (which is extremely good for you). Not only is it rich in antioxidants, but it’s a great source of insoluble fibre and can help to promote a healthy gut, reduce constipation, and lower the risk of some diseases. This powder can then be added to smoothies, coffees, juices, soup, teas – and more! We would suggest purchasing these from a trusted source, to ensure they are handled with care.

  • Tincture/extract: This is one of our favourite ways to consume Mushrooms, considering how simple it is to add into your everyday routine. There’s a bit of overlap (and confusion) when it comes to mushroom extracts and tinctures, and the difference comes down to how they’re made. A mushroom extract is created by soaking the mushroom in any type of solvent, whereas a mushroom tincture specifically uses alcohol, allowing for a potent tincture to be left for consumption.
